ALOUATTA GUARIBA AS A SENTINEL FOR YELLOW FEVER

Abstract Objectives: To review scientific evidence on the role of Alouatta guariba as a sentinel species for yellow fever surveillance. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using the Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases, including studies published between 2021 and 2026. Articles addressing yellow fever occurrence in Alouatta, epidemiological aspects, mortality, and surveillance were selected and qualitatively analyzed. Results: The literature indicates that Alouatta guariba is highly susceptible to the yellow fever virus, often showing high mortality during outbreaks. Epizootics in these primates frequently precede human cases, making them important indicators of viral circulation in forest environments. Studies also report significant population declines following outbreaks and emphasize the value of monitoring non-human primate deaths for early detection of the virus. Conclusion: Alouatta guariba plays an important role as a biological sentinel for yellow fever surveillance, although outbreaks represent a serious conservation concern. Integrating wildlife monitoring with public health strategies is essential for effective disease surveillance.
