FROM PRACTICE ROOM TO CLINIC: MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS IN VIOLINISTS

Violin performance demands highly refined motor control under sustained asymmetric postures and repetitive upper limb activity. These conditions expose musicians to a high prevalence of playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMD), particularly affecting the neck, shoulder complex, elbow, wrist, and hand. This chapter integrates epidemiological, biomechanical, and clinical evidence to examine the mechanisms underlying common injuries in violinists, including tendinopathies, nerve compression syndromes, spinal overload, and focal dystonia. Emphasis is placed on the interaction between posture, muscle activation patterns, joint loading, and neuromotor control. Beyond describing pathology, the chapter discusses preventive strategies grounded in biomechanical reasoning, motor learning principles, and physical conditioning. By translating scientific findings into concepts meaningful to performers and teachers, this work aims to promote sustainable technique, injury prevention, and long-term artistic development.
